Additional instructions for autism & add/adhd

In addition to the diet recommended above, people with autism and/or ADD/ADHD should also abstain from all gluten, dairy, and sugar for three months prior to beginning the Synergistic Solutions cleanse program and continue this diet throughout the healing process.*

Scientists aren't certain about what causes autism spectrum disorders (ASD), but studies of people with ASD have found irregularities in several regions of the brain. There are two main divisions of the autonomic nervous system: the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system is involved in stimulating the body and preparing it for activity (generally considered "fight or flight" responses) while the parasympathetic nervous system activates tranquil functions such as digestion. Many people with ASD or ADD/ADHD have an under-active or malfunctioning parasympathetic nervous system.  This can result in an underdeveloped digestive system which does not properly break down foods.  Certain foods, when not broken down properly, act like a drug to the brain which increases hyperactivity and erratic behavior.  Unfortunately they are also addictive and the person craves those drug-producing foods.  The most common examples are gluten and casein (a milk protein).  Sugar is also addictive and causes hyperactivity and erratic behavior.  It is important to abstain from these offending foods for a period of time to allow the body to heal properly.  If the digestive system is healed and functioning properly it should be able to properly break down foods including gluten and casein, but be patient.  Healing takes time.  There are no shortcuts to authentic healing.
